Musically Inspired

Mikaela Hansen, granddaughter of The Hansen Ohana’s Bob and Donna Hansen, used her love of music to write and perform a song for her college application to Western. The uniqueness of the video has spread across the various social media aspect of Western. Mikaela will be attending Western in the fall and hopes to incorporate music in some way no matter what career she decides on.

Great Whale Count

Since 1991 the Great Whale Count happens annually at the end of February using citizen scientists. The whale count is used as a tool to monitor changes in the whale population from year to year.

This years whale count was held Saturday February 28. The count for 2015 was 1,488 whales. This is up from last years total of 1,331 whales. Of the totals, 7% were calves down 2% from last years total of 9%. Many thanks to those citizen scientists who were out in windy and sometimes rainy weather.

Registration for next years count starts in January 2016 with the event happening on February 27, 2016. For more information, please visit the Maui Whale Festival.

Parking Fees For The Shops At Wailea

THE SHOPS AT WAILEA CHARGES FOR PARKING!

In regards to The Shops parking plan, they still have to submit final plans to WCA but it has been approved by the County. This is what we know so far:

They plan to start May 1, 2015 and Employees will pay $1.50 per exit (a full-time employee working 5 days a week will spend a minimum of $30/mo.-more if they leave the property more than once per day).
There will be a grace period of 20 minutes (maybe longer).
Tenants will pay $1 ea. for validation cards for customers; however, store tenants do not have to participate.
A minimum purchase may be required and may vary per store.
Parking charge is $6 per half hour, $42 for all day. WOW!
Kiosks will be used to acquire an exit ticket. 5 kiosks located at the 5 access points of the Shops. Customer must take original ticket and validation to kiosk to receive exit ticket. You will have 10-15 minutes to exit once you get exit ticketEntry/Exit is unmanned, all automated.

Haleakala National Park at Kipahula

Located 12 miles past Hana Town, this National Park can be found after crossing a bridge right before the entrance. There is a visitor center with parking available ($10 per vehicle, also valid for entrance into Haleakala Crater and Summit.) Restrooms and campgrounds are also available.There are several hiking trails in the park, one leads down to the lower pools which form Oheo gulch, better known as “Seven Sacred Pools”. There are in fact, many more than 7 pools and waterfalls that flow through ‘Ohe‘o Gulch and lead down to the ocean.Pipiwai Trail to Waimoku Falls
Pipiwai Trail is a 4 mile roundtrip hiking trail that winds through a fresh water stream and bamboo forest, leading up to 400 ft Waimoku Falls, the tallest waterfalls on Maui. Hiking to the falls is uphill, with a change in elevation of approximately 700 feet over the 2 miles. Breathtaking views and many changes in scenery make it worth it as you hike well worn paths, over bridges and boarded walkways.Guided hikes with a National Park ranger are available on Sunday’s, 10am. Reservation are essential by calling 808-248-7375. Additional guided activities include Nature Talks and Cultural Demonstrations.
