New Affordable Rental Housing Project Proposed

A new family affordable rental housing project has been proposed in Kahului by the Catholic Charities Hawai’i. The proposed project would have 108 one-bedroom units and 70 two-bedroom units. The 5 acre site would also have a park and a gathering room.

The project, named the Hale Piling Family Affordable Rental Housing Project, would have the first phase completed in approximately 16 to 18 months. The units will be intended for those earning 60% or less of the average median income.

Estimated cost of the project is $66 million. According to 2020 guidelines, maximum rent for a one-bedroom unit to be around $1,153 and $1,384 for a two-bedroom.

New Ashley Homestore Opening in Kahului

Saturday, August 24th, Ashley HomeStore will be having it’s grand opening celebration from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm in Kahului. The new store is located at 237 Dairy Road.

The 20,000 square foot store is brand new and will showcase furniture for living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, and home office. This is the fifth Ashley store in Hawaii, but the first outside of Oahu. Festivities on Saturday will include face painting, food and refreshments.

Ashley HomeStore was established in 1945. Its considered one of the largest furniture manufacturer’s in the world. Representatives are excited to be opening the new store in Kahului and bringing the residents of Maui their best selling furniture.

Maui Fair

Happening Now! The 95th Maui Fair! The fair takes place at the War Memorial Complex in Kahului. The theme for this years Fair is “Celebrating the Greatest Things In Life”. $10 admission fee for adults, kids aged 5-11 $5 admission fee. 4 and under are free. On Sunday the admission fee lowers to $7 and $3 respectively.

This year the fair will be having its first street party starting at 5:30 pm. Be on the lookout tonight for a possible flashmob! On Sunday the street party will have some Aloha Characters.  Sunday at 3:00 at the main stage is the 12th annual Chili Cookoff sponsored by the Maui Fire Department. All proceeds of the Chili Cookoff will benefit the Shriners Hospital on behalf of the Maui County Fire Fighters Relief Association.

The Joy Zone has a new ride this year! Come by and ride the “Seven Seas”! Other rides include Magic Maze, Umbrella Squad, Zipper, and the Wave Swinger! Credits per ride vary. You can see more information regarding rides and credit cost here.

Events taking place at the fair this year include exhibits, a pie contest, baby of the year contest, and World Of Jam dance competition! Target comes to Maui

Exciting news for those of you who are Target lovers.  Target is scheduled to open a store sometime in 2014.  The store will be located at the new 24 Acre Punnene Shopping Center in Kahului.  Also planned for the center will be eateries, retail stores and other services.  Originally the first Target store on Maui was planned to be built in Kihei, but those plans fell through.  With the variety of items Target has to offer, it will be a huge draw not only for the residents in Kahului, but for all the residents of Maui.  You can read the entire article here provided by Pacific Business News.
