Howard Dicus stated on KHNL HAWAII NEWS NOW TV that the Oahu Chamber of Commerce who has generally been gentle with Governor Ing that he shorten the quarantine ending date for Mainlanders to visit Hawaii sooner than July 31st due to many businesses being forced to close their doors forever since the majority of businesses depend on Visitors from outside Hawaii to survive.

April shows a surprising resilience in median sales prices. Homes prices were up 1.6% since last year at $762,000. Condos were up 10.1% from last year at $569,000. Number of new listings were down about 25% for homes and about 9% for condos. Inventory as well as pending sales for April remained low for both homes and condos. For the first 13 days of May the market is still showing resilience with 27 properties pending for South Maui, 7 properties for West Maui, 5 properties for the North Shore, 10 properties upcountry and 22 properties pending for Central Maui. With low interest rates and low inventory, the market is still moving.
There are a lot of plans to build projects in many parts of Maui over the next ten years. Additional housing is needed on Maui for Maui residents. One project is the Wailea Hills development, they have a portion of the 75 units for sale in 15 separate buildings; they will have underground parking. They have beautiful floorplans, many with gorgeous views and good locations. Prices started in the mid $1.5’s million and up and seem to be selling pretty steadily. Mayor Victorino has set up a program for food distribution.
Maui County Farm Bureau will use $20,000 weekly to purchase food from local farms for food distribution sites around the county – similar to the produce giveaway organized by Pukalani Superette on March 30.
“You do not need to be a member of the Maui County Farm Bureau to participate in this program,” Board President Teena Rasmussen said. “The application, along with program rules are now posted on the Farm Bureau website.”
The deadline to sign up for the program is April 12, and an application can be found on the Maui County Farm Bureau website. Participants do not need to be a member of the farm bureau.
Hawaii Farmers Union United will use $10,000 to set up and run online/pick-up food hubs. Initial funding provided by the County of Maui will be used to purchase an online ordering software package. Subsequent funding will be used to purchase food from other farms for distributing to those in need.

As the old saying reminds us most years March comes in like a lion and hopefully goes out like a lamb. Well, one can only hope that to be true with all our hearts. The many events such as the beginning of spring break, St Patrick’s Day and soon Passover and Easter as well many other sporting events makes it tough to suddenly face a five week stay in place at home with the exception of essential service workers. Hopefully it won’t be longer than that. However, it could be.
Turning lemons into lemonade is the answer to keep things positive as we wait this pandemic away from as many as possible. Order games from Amazon. If you have kids this is a great time to teach them some cooking, plan a garden and then get it started. What about that garage or closet that needs attention. Most importantly, exercise! As you come up with some great ideas, please share them with us and we spread the word. The more we work together to help each other, the quicker time with fly by the better we will all be.
I have some great news. I recently read that warmer weather of 60 degrees and higher to melt the spikes on the corona virus spikes on the head making it harder for the virus to attach to the body to cause us illness. We are in the early stages on Maui and I am sure hoping that is the truth, so we have a light experience with it. We have had 25 cases so far on Maui.

Up until the Shelter in place order we remained steady and occupied with showings for both our listings and buyers. Once the order was given everyone experienced an understandable slow down. It has not been a complete halt as there are several buyers that are considering our listings to shelter in place as they rather spend their time here in Maui then go to where the outbreak is more significant where they live. Our escrows have mostly proceeded on without incident but there have been extensions put in place on some, and small price negotiations on another.
With the institution of lower interest rates eleven million Americans applied to refinance their properties which has somewhat slowed the process down for traditional financing. With the high demand this has pushed rates up which will likely be temporary during this short-term hardship. The rates dropped to 3.25% for a very short period, then they shot up to 4.5% with the high demand and now they have already lowered to 3.75% at the time of writing this.
