National Merit Scholar

Congratulations Laney Flanagan! Laney, a Maui High School Senior, has won the National Merit Scholarship. Laney was chosen from 15,000 finalists! She is the lucky recipient of  $2,500 to help offset some of her college expenses.

Selection is based on academics, grades, subject difficulty, testings, and leadership qualities. These things along with a letter of recommendation and an essay are judged by a committee.

Laney plans on majoring in chemistry. We are sure she will succeed in whatever field she chooses. Congratulations again!

Large Scale Solar Project

This past Saturday started Maui’s first large solar project partnership between Maui Electric Company and Kenyon Energy. Maui Electric is buying power from Kenyon’s South Maui Renewable Resources.  The project can possibly generate up to 2.87 megawatt of solar power that is then delivered to Maui Electric’s grid for roughly 11 cents per kilowatt-hour.

Maui is ahead of the 30% target they set for themselves getting 34% of its energy from renewable resources. Those resources include wind, hydroelectric, biofuels , and solar. Maui Electric will begin purchasing more power from an additional Kenyon project later this month.

Free Workshop Friday

For people looking for ways to modify their homes regardless of age and physical limitations, you may want to come to the free AARP workshop this Friday starting at 9:00 am. The workshop is being held at the Kaunoa Senior Center in Spreckelsville in the Wellness Center.

Most aging residents would like to continue living in their homes but would need to do modifications to do so. The bathroom is the main concern for those wishing to remain in their homes. The topics for the workshop will include ways to inexpensively modify your home as well as those who may need to plan for a major remodel.

Those interested in attending can register here.
