Royal High Tea Fundraiser Raises $25,000

Maui Cancer Wellness Retreats hosted its first Royal High Tea Fundraiser at Lona Ridge in Wailuku on April 28. The event raised $25,000! This will provide scholarships to 30 cancer survivors to attend the wellness retreat September 20th to September 22nd at Napili Kai Resort.

The 90 guests that were in attendance participated in both a live and silent auction. Entertainment was provided by a harpist and violinist, with the food menu prepared by chef Bev Gannon. Owner of Lona Ridge estate, Leona Wilson, donated the venue for the event.

The retreats are a way to help cancer survivors rejuvenate and focus on wellness and healing. The Maui Cancer Wellness Retreats is a non-profit organization that has been serving Maui County for over 20 years.

Lahaina Tenants Receive Positive News

Over 250 residents of Front Street Apartments in Lahaina received good news. Governor David Ige signed a bill to keep rents from increasing to market prices. Hawaii Finance and Development Corporation will begin negotiations with the Front Street Apartments owners in the hopes of acquiring the property.

Owners of the affordable housing apartments originally wanted to raise the rent rates to market value by August 2019. Hawaii Finance and Development Corporation (HHFDC) have put a hold until August 2020 for now while court proceedings filed by tenants are completed or until HHFDC can purchase the property.

HHFDC is undergoing the due diligence process for appraisal and funding of the apartments. Although the saga isn’t fully over, there is hope for the tenants that a solution is around the corner and that they will be able to maintain their residences.

Police Officers Build Community At Maui Youth Center

Police officers took advantage of the beginning of summer to visit the Kihei Youth Center. The outreach is to encourage children to be safe and to stay out of trouble. The officers use this time to let them know how important the kids are as well as their families and their community.

Officers took part in playing basketball and dodgeball even donating balls purchased with their own money. By bridging the gap between the police and children, the children will be more likely to come to officers if they are in need of help.

This program, Sports For Kids, is run by school resource officers during school brakes. The program is hoping to expand and reach other areas this year and in the future.

Renewable Energy Forum

On June 26th, located at the J. Walter Cameron Center Auditorium, officials will be discussing how Maui can be powered 100% renewable energy. Maui Electric Co., Maui Tomorrow and the Sierra Club will be discussing how to make this a reality at the event titled “100% Renewable Energy: What Will Maui Look Like?”.

Maui reached 38% renewable energy production back in 2018. Over the goal of 30% by 2020. Panelists will discuss and share what can be done to work toward the 100% renewable energy goal by 2045. The need is for carbon-neutral power, and technology that includes solar and wind.

Light refreshments will be served at 5:30 pm prior to the 6:00 pm start time. This is a free event that is open to the public.

Reminder: Maui Film Festival

Reminder, the Maui Film Festival begins tomorrow! The festival is one of Maui’s premier events held at various locations throughout Maui including the Wailea Resort and the Celestial Cinema.

In the evening during the festival, a culinary event is held. The launch party takes place at the Grand Wailea Wednesday, June 12th with the Taste of Summer. Guests must be 21 and over to attend. Cocktails will be paired with with tastey bites! Purchasing tickets to Taste of Summer also grants you access for back to back premieres that evening.

Taste of Chocolate is held at the Four Seasons Resort on Thursday, June 13th. This is a dress to impress event for guests 21 and over that is all about delicious sweet treats! Tickets for Taste of Chocolate also includes two premiere’s plus activities at the Celestial Cinema that evening.

Taste of Wailea on Saturday June 15th, is the best of the best from Wailea chef’s and is held at the Wailea Golf Academy. Chef’s will be serving up their mouthwatering specialties. This is also a 21 and over event that will include two premier admission tickets at Celestial Cinema for that evening.

The movies playing during the festival at Celestial Cinema include True Hawaii, The Magic Beneath Us, Stuffed, Wild Rose, Bottom Of The 9th, The Farewell, Pavarotti, Paige, This Excellent Life, and Echo In The Canyon. Playing at Castle Theater are One, Gay Chorus Deep South, Becoming Nobody, Cracked Up, Well Groomed, CRSHD, Botero, and We Rise Up.
