Old Makena Resort

Maui Planning Commission has approved ATC Makena Holdings the demolishing of the old Makena Beach & Golf resort. They no longer have to build a separate 76 unit boutique hotel on the 24 acre site. The project density has been brought down from 152 units to 65 units. The vote was 5 to 1 in favor of the new amendments.

The initial boutique hotel will now be replaced with multifamily buildings. There were concerns with converting the old hotel into a boutique hotel that included the age of the structure. Long time residents of Makena are in favor of the new changes to the project.

How To Prevent Fires In The Home

We have all seen what fires can do to innocent lives.  Here’s a few tips that might save your life.  I’d like to thank Brady Spangler of Axia Home Loans for sharing this.

Everyone sets off a smoke alarm every now and then, but actual home fires happen more than you may realize. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), there were more than 358,500 home fires per year from 2011-2015, resulting in an annual average of $6.7 billion in damage. Here’s what you need to know to prevent fire in your home.

Where Fires Start
Home fires are most likely to start in the kitchen, with cooking equipment being the leading cause. Never leave a burning stove unattended, and make sure towels, curtains and other flammables aren’t too close to the cooktop. Have a lid handy to help smother potential flames.

Space heaters, chimneys and fireplaces are also cause for concern. Buy heating equipment with automatic shut-offs, and keep heaters away from upholstered furniture, clothing and bedding. And be sure to have your chimney professionally cleaned and inspected every year.

Smoke Alarms
Your home should be equipped with functioning smoke alarms. The NFPA recommends having one alarm on each level of your home, inside each bedroom and outside each sleeping area. Test alarms monthly and replace batteries twice a year.

Fire Escape Plan

It’s also important to have a fire escape route planned in case evacuation is necessary. Walk through each room in your home and identify two possible exits in case of fire. Be sure to set a meeting place where everyone should gather once they are safely outside.

Practice your escape plan and these safety tips regularly. Fire safety is never something you want to leave to chance.

The Hansen Ohana Gives Back To The Community

Thank you Clint Hansen, Maui Paintball Owner and Broker/Partner at The Hansen Ohana’s Maui Luxury Real Estate LLC, for giving back to our Maui community and Maui’s future by supporting the teen academy and the Children’s Justice Center.

Maui Paintball hosted police training simulation for approximately 10 teens who participated in the second annual Maui Police Department Teen Academy. Not only did the teens learn firearm safety, they participated in fitness training, CPR training, toured a correctional facility, and also toured the Wailuku Police Station cooperatively with Pyramis Company.

To participate in the program, students must show an interest in a police career, and have a minimum GPA of 2.0. Students must fill out an application and be interviewed by a three-officer panel before being chosen as one of the ten to participate.

Clint Hansen donates the use of the paintball field, time of his employees, safety gear, and equipment to the program. To read more about the Teen Academy, visit the Maui News website here.

Expansion Being Considered

We were pleased to see the county considering plans to expand Kula Agricultural Park.  If you have ever attended a 4H event and watched our future farmers with such enthusiasm on their faces as they learn about the different aspects of farming, it can make your heart sing.

The Maui News reported that the county is considering leasing and hopefully eventually purchasing 869 acres of former sugar cane land. The hope is to open the doors for small farmers who otherwise don’t have the opportunity for small farming parcels.

The 869 acres the county is considering would be able to grow crops that would include bananas, papayas, pineapples, cucumbers, tomatoes, corn, potatoes and chickpeas. Livestock could also be raised there as well.

For The Love Of Coffee!

Since I am a coffee-holic the richness of a good coffee without bitterness makes the world of difference to me, especially that first morning cup! So far in my search I have found Maui Coffee Roasters to be the best. We were fortunate enough to meet Seymour when we were looking into growing our own coffee beans to enjoy. He was an incredible man.

Congratulations to Olinda Organic Farms for winning Best Overall Coffee out of 107 entries at the Maui Seed to Cup coffee festival. The festival took place at the Maui Plantation Farm. Maui coffee is a vibrant high demand industry, but with the high cost of real estate many farmers are worried.  As read in the Maui News, Act 116 will help MauiGrown Coffee expand with special bonds to help cultivate up to 1,00o acres of land.
