The ship is used as a training vessel. Cadets train in all aspects of running a ship including navigation and engineering. Ages of the cadets range from 19 to 25 years old. While on island, the cadets will be given tours, meet Maui Matsuri residents, and participate in events at the UH of Maui College.

Kauai Possibly Breaks Record

The recent flash flooding that occurred April 15th on Kauai may have broken a national 24 hour rainfall record according to The National Weather Service. 49.69 inches of rain were recorded in Waipa during a 24 hour period.

This total still has to be certified and if it is, it will have broken the previous record of 43 inches in Alvin, Texas back from 1979.

The National Climate Extremes Committee will review the data collected at the Waipa gauge and determine if indeed an almost 40 year record has been broken.

On Sunday the controversial southern terminus Lahaina bypass was blessed.  The $48.7 million project runs 2.6 miles. The project will redirect Lahaina bound traffic. This section is scheduled to open on April 23rd.

Not everyone is please with the new traffic redirection. Director Jade Butay has vowed his commitment that any issues that arise from the new bypass will be addressed. The hope for all involved with the project is that the new section will run smoothly once people get used to it.
