Paul Simon Next Week!

Paul Simon will be performing next week at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center on Tuesday, August 13th and Wednesday, August 14th. Show time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

Simon and his own unique sound of folk rock has earned 16 grammys. His bio includes singer, songwriter, and actor. Simon was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. He was named in 2011 by Rolling Stone magazine as one of top 100 greatest guitarists and again by Rolling Stone in 2015 as one of the top 100 greatest songwriters.

After the breakup of former duo Simon & Garfunkel, Paul Simon went solo starting in 1971. Some of his greatest hits include Something So Right, 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover, Peace Like a River plus many more.

New Safeway To Open Tomorrow

The new Safeway in Kahului at the Ho’okele Shopping Center located at 1090 Hookele St., will be opening tomorrow. The new Safeway will be over 57,000 square feet and include Starbucks, a pharmacy, Bank of Hawaii, Coinstar, Redbox, Western Union, food bars, a gas station, and wi-fi.

Staff from the old Safeway on Kamehameha Avenue will now staff the new store in Kahului along with newly added additional staff. Ho’okele Shopping Center will eventually add additional retailers as well as a drive thru restaurant.

Safeway can also be found throughout Maui in Wailuku, Lahaina and Kihei.

Obon Festival Paia

The traditional Obon Celebration was brought over to Hawaii by Japanese immigrants. The tradition has continued throughout the years as a cultural and religious celebration that includes dancing and music.

Paia Mantokuji Mission will be holding the Obon Dance & Festival on both Friday, July 12th and Saturday, July 13th. The Mission is located at 253 Hana Highway.

On both Friday and Saturday nights, services will begin at 6:00 pm. At 6:30 pm food booths will be opening for food and refreshment purchases. Friday Night at 7:00 pm Maui Taiko will be performing. Saturday night at 7:00 Zenshin Daiko will be performing. Both Friday and Saturday night will conclude with the traditional Bon Dance from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm.

This is a free family friendly event!

64th Annual Makawao Rodeo

Starting Thursday, July 4th and running through Sunday, July 7th is the 64th Annual Makawao Rodeo at the Oskie Rice Arena. This four day event is a favorite for locals and visitors to attend every year during the 4th of July holiday celebration.

The Makawao Parade is one of the highlights for the event. The parade will take place on Saturday, July 6th starting at 9:00 am. The parade is full of colorful floats, decorated horses, and lots of people marching along the route.

The schedule starts on July 4 with the prelims for the qualifying. On Friday the 5th, it’s BullBash. Gates will open at 4:00 pm with the show scheduled to begin at 6:30. On this day expect a beer garden and food vendors.  On Saturday, July 6th, gates will open at 1:00 pm with the rodeo starting at 3:00 pm. Rodeo events include mugging, barrels, and sheep riding! On the final day Sunday, July 7th, gates will open at 10:00 am and the rodeo will begin at 12:30 pm. Sunday’s events include the finals and awards presentation.

Guests in attendance may want to bring an umbrella for shelter from various weather elements. Seating is provided by bleachers so plan accordingly.
