Iao Valley State Monument Reopens

A new reservation system has been implemented at the Maui state park Iao Valley State Monument in an effort to cut down on the number of daily visitors, mostly from out-of-state. The system reduced the number of daily visitors from an average of 1,000 before the reservation system was implemented to a maximum of 600. Improvements to the parking lot and slope stabilization work necessitated the closure from August 2020 to May 2021. The $10 parking fee and $5 entry fee for non-residents will help pay for further monument services and renovations, and additional employees may be hired with the money. After Waianapanapa State Park, Diamond Head State Monument, and Haena State Park, the monument is the fourth state park in Hawaii to demand reservations.
