LAHAINA — Halloween will be in full swing Friday, Oct. 31, on Front Street.     

Maui Police expect 20,000 people to show up, and the department will assign more than 50 officers to monitor the celebration and run at least one sobriety checkpoint for motorists that night.    

Under the direction of Officer Lawrence Kauhaahaa, police will close Front Street starting at 4 p.m. for Soroptimist International of West Maui and the Rotary Clubs of Lahaina and Lahaina Sunrise’s 30th annual Keiki Halloween Parade. All children under age 12 are invited to participate.     

Big-wave surfer, water safety officer and accomplished waterman Archie Kalepa of Lahaina will serve as grand marshall of the parade.     

The Lahainaluna High School Band and ROTC Drill Team will also march in the event.      Participants will begin lining up at 4:15 p.m. at the corner of Papalaua and Front streets. The parade will start at 4:30 p.m., continue down Front Street, and end at the Banyan Tree stage. All keiki in the parade will walk across the stage to receive ribbons and goodie bags.

After the parade, police will remain and keep Front Street closed to vehicles until crowds dwindle.     Lahaina Patrol Capt. Charles Hirata stated that police will watch for disorderly conduct, including fighting and harassment, amid the large crowds of costumed revelers.     

The Maui County Cultural Resources Commission this year denied LahainaTown Action Committee’s permit for its traditional Halloween activities, including bands along Front Street, food booths and a costume contest in Banyan Tree Park.    

The Pioneer Inn will have a costume contest starting at 7 p.m. for cash prizes: $500 for first place, $300 for second and $200 for third. Gift certificates will be awarded for the funniest and sexiest costumes.     

Cost of admission is $5. Super G (Greg di Piazza) and his rock band will play music at the Pioneer Inn until 11 p.m. Call 661-3636 for information.    

Restaurants will probably be standing room only.    

“We have asked all of our employees to work and be in costume on Halloween night,” said Chad Sugai, manager of Lahaina Fish Company. They will have a full menu from 5 to 10 p.m. and a grill menu from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.      

Longhi’s will stay open until 2 a.m., with dancing starting at 9 p.m.      

Kimo’s will serve their regular menu up to 10:30 p.m. and drinks until 1:30 a.m.     

The cover at Moose McGillycuddy’s will be $5 from 4 p.m., increasing to $15 at 11 p.m.    

At the Wharf Cinema Center across from Banyan Tree Park, keiki and adults can compete in the 25th Ghoulish Gala Karaoke Costume Contest    

Contestants, who must be in costumes, will sing their hearts out for a chance to win over $1,000 in prizes. The cauldron will be filled with Wharf Bucks, travel, activities, luaus, food, merchandise and more prizes.       This contest will begin promptly at 7:30 p.m.        

The fourth annual Keiki Karaoke Costume Contest will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Contestants must be 5-12 years of age and in costume.      

Each entrant will receive a “treat” bag before howling away to compete for the grand prize of $100 in Wharf Bucks, movie tickets and more.     

Registration for both contests begins at 5 p.m. (up to 6 p.m. for the keiki contest and up to 7:30 p.m. for the adults).

“Queen of Karaoke” Toddy Lilikoi will emcee this “spookarific” event.      

After the contest, celebrate the night with Marty Dread at Cool Cat Cafe from 10:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.     Mulligan’s at The Wharf will feature Silky Ringo from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., or  join the Blue Lagoon for live entertainment at 10 p.m.

Lahaina Cannery Mall will provide a fun and safe place for the family to enjoy a night of Halloween magic, trick-or-treating, crafts, face painting and its famous keiki costume contest on Oct. 31.     

It all kicks off at 5 p.m. with magic from Brenton Keith & His Bag O‘ Tricks, followed by illusionist Kenn Serrano.     

More than a dozen prizes will be awarded in the annual keiki costume contest in three age groups (0-4, 5-8, 9-12), plus scariest costume, cutest costume and most-creative costume.     

The competition continues with the first-ever Maui Gold Pineapple Decorating Contest. Forget pumpkins! This year, grab a Maui Gold pineapple and dress it up to win big.

Waiola Church will offer $5 parking on a lot along Wainee Street near Shaw Street, and sell hot dogs, hamburgers, chili, stew, rice, chow fun, water and soda at Campbell Park on Front Street from 4 to 11 p.m.
